How to Connect to World of Warcraft Private Servers

Follow these steps to get started playing on World of Warcraft private servers. Whether you are new or returning, this guide will walk you through the process.

1

Download the correct client

Get the WoW client matching the server expansion from the server website. Extract it to a folder on your computer.

2

Edit realmlist.wtf

Navigate to your WoW folder and open Data/enUS/realmlist.wtf (or the locale matching your client) in a text editor. Replace the contents with the realmlist provided by the server, e.g., "set realmlist logon.servername.com".

3

Create an account

Register on the server website. Some servers use in-game account creation, but most require website registration first.

4

Launch the game

Run WoW.exe (not the Launcher) from your game folder. Log in with the credentials you created on the server website.

5

Select realm and play

You should see the server in the realm list. Select it, create a character, and start playing.

Configuration File

The key configuration file you need to modify is: realmlist.wtf

Getting the Client

You need the WoW client matching the server expansion (e.g., 3.3.5a for WotLK, 1.12.1 for Vanilla). Most servers provide download links on their website. Do not use your retail Blizzard client — private servers require a separate copy.
